Henry Melton | Dallas Cowboys: Agree to terms with free agent DT

Henry Melton, Dallas Cowboys, CowboysThe Dallas Cowboys just scored a big touchdown by agreeing to terms with Chicago Bears free agent defensive tackle Henry Melton.  It is considered a 1 year deal, with an option of 3 years, if he performs well.

On his Twitter account, Melton let everyone know the news, “Thank you Chicago for the best 5 years of my life!…. I can’t wait to begin the next chapter of my life… With a star on my helmet.”

Coming off a torn ACL, the former college running back at University of Texas has faced a questionable market. Had he not been injured, Melton would have been one of the top free agent defensive linemen to open free agency. The 27-year-old Melton reached the Pro Bowl in 2012 under Marinelli, recording 44 tackles and six sacks for the Bears. Melton had seven sacks in 2011.

Jerry Jones views Melton as a perfect fit for their 3-technique defensive tackle spot that is crucial in their 4-3 Tampa 2 scheme. The Cowboys value his speed and experience playing under Marinelli in a similar system. Melton was the fourth-round pick of the Bears in 2010.  In his first three seasons, he totaled 15.5 sacks.
